The east African country of Eritrea has a long list of human rights abuses, which included stifling of a free press and free speech, torture and detention without a fair trial. Because of this situation a large diaspora of Eritreans exists. Even if people leave Eritrea they are forced to pay a 2% tax on all earnings to the Eritrean goverment. The 2% diaspora tax is collected by the Consulate General of Eritrea in Toronto. CKUW news director Michael Welch talks with two Eritreans living in Winnipeg about the Eritrean goverment and the diaspora tax.
